WebSep 29, 2013 · In 1853, a man named John Studebaker arrived in Hornitos and worked as a blacksmith. After earning a bit of money, he moved on to Hangtown to make wheelbarrows and wagons for the miners. Another early day Hornitian to later become famous was Domenico Ghirardelli who ran a general supply store here during the mid-1850s.
