WebMost of them are named after indian tribes. About half of them are named after the Native American names for the regions or peoples who lived there. A bunch are named after people, mostly monarchs. Some are named after geographic features (Montana, Colorado, Nevada, Maine). A couple (Idaho, California) are just made up.
